About

Katya Walton is a maker and designer specialising in woodwork, working at the intersection of art and function. Her practice explores furniture as a collaborative and expressive medium, transforming everyday objects into functional artworks that challenge conventional boundaries between design and fine art. Walton’s work is driven by the belief that art should exist within everyday life.

Sustainability underpins both the material and structural decisions within her practice. Walton’s practice is rooted in extending material lifespan, circular economies, and collaborative making. Through her work, she seeks to create objects that are not only useful, but expressive inviting people to sit with art, live with it, and engage with it as part of everyday life.

She studied  on the Art and Design Foundation course at Manchester School of Art, specialising in 3D design, before going on to study 3D Design and Craft at the University of Brighton, where her focus developed around furniture and wood-based making. Now, Walton maintains an independent studio practice, producing furniture, print, and small-run garments.

Her professional experience includes working at Christie’s auction house, which informed her understanding of the art market and contemporary practice. Her work has been exhibited in the UK and internationally, including shows in Manchester, Brighton, London, Bath, and Madrid. Walton has also been published by Dezeen and recognised with awards from Habitat and Manchester Metropolitan University.
